Skillion Electric Fat Bike Bicycle

The Coolest Electric Bike is the Skillion Electric Fatbike. Designed to be handled off-road, on single track and also great for commuting or around town – the one bike for all your needs. The extra wide tyres make a Fatbike ridable in places you can’t take other bikes on soft surfaces including sand and snow.  The rear hub-mounted 200 watt motor fitted, an innovation only available here, provides that bit of extra push when you need it for on or off-road.

About this project

A Fatbike is great all round bike for commuting, off road trails, exploring, adventuring and having loads of fun especially with friends. The addition of the Electric motor makes cruising easy and fun.

A Fatbike has extra wide tyres and this gives so much more grip and traction, and allows you to go into places a normal bike would simply get bogged down. The lower pressures  less than 20psi means the ride is smooth. For soft sand the tyre pressure can be reduced to very low levels to give great traction even on very soft sand. In this area the electrics make such a difference. Having an electric motor means that people of all skill and fitness levels can enjoy riding together and this makes it ideal for enjoying the outdoors with your friends.

Everywhere you go on the bike people are interested and come up to you asking about the bike and I always get other bikers waving and giving the thumbs up on the bike. An little kids are the best they always say “look at the wheels on that bike – its like a motor bike” it always makes me smile and is so much fun!

Designed based on our 15 years experience in mountain biking this bike is a high quality bike designed to be handled off road, this is also a suitable bike to commute with. The rear hub-mounted 200 watt motor fitted, provides extra push when you need it for those hills or off-road. The choice of 4” wide wheels adds comfort in any terrain. The frame itself is built out of Alu Aluminium, that is used and trusted by bicycle brands worldwide, delivering a light, stiff and extremely durable frame.

Quality Shimano powered drivetrain with 3 X 7 gears will give you the right tools to tackle any kind of terrain with reliable and predictive shifting for when the going gets rough. The Lvjin handlebars and Aifeit 6195 saddle will keep you comfortable at speed and in control at all times. Braking on the Tektro – DB-280 disc brakes both front and back. Having disc brakes on a mountain bikes makes a world of a difference specially when you’re riding in wet weather and need good and consistent braking power by isolating the rim from the brake. Finally, to keep you connected to the ground at all times the bike comes with stainless steel spokes laced onto 27.5” Double Wall alloy 80mm rims adding massive doses of strength to the wheel set, allowing the round and rolling profile of the Chaoyang 5126 tyres to deliver unparalleled speed, on and off road.

The 36V 8.8Amp hour battery will last up to 46klm, with power controlled via the throttle grip allows you to control the motor torque to a fine adjustment for long range cruising, over the sand assist or hill climbing a rocky single track.

 All Skillion bikes come with a 3 years warranty on Frame and Forks and 3 months warranty on tyres and 1 year warranty on all other components.

The Speed and Cadence Sensor is a Smart Device for iphone 4s/5 and iPad/ipad 4/ ipad mini and iPod Touch 5.

This is not included with the Skillion Electric Fatbike but can be fitted easily

Journey Trailer

The Journey Trailer is designed to carry your camping equipment but can be equally well suited for picnics.

Also useful for day to day shopping or carrying your office equipment to and from while you commute.

We also see tradespeople and couriers using this for taking their parcels or tools direct to their customers and bypassing the traffic and parking problems.

This is not included with the Skillion Electric Fatbike but can be fitted easily

How the funds will be used

We’ve developed several working prototypes but we now need to tool up for production and place a volume order with the factory.

Some of my other work

I’ve been an Electronics Engineer for 25 years and a passionate mountain biker for over 15 years.  I’ve always enjoyed getting outdoors in the fresh air and getting a bit of exercise. Until I was introduced to the Fatbike I believed that a garage full of bikes was needed to really explore all the options a bike can offer and there were some places a bike just could go.

I now take my Skillion Electric Fatbike to places to places that I’d been missing and enjoying the outdoors like never before. What surprised me with the bike is that it’s a new experience in riding the low C.O.G makes the bike feel very stable and safe. Also riding on and off the cycleways is easy and fun need to avoid the traffic and head across the park – no worries the tyres come into there own. Whenever I take the bike out it always makes me smile and me and my friends have so much fun.

Risks and challenges

The biggest technical challenge is around Quality Control, as we demand very high standards of our bikes. I will be investing heavily in developing our specifications and quality processes to be sure our supporters get the very best bike possible.
Beyond that we need support getting the word out, as we are sure that once people see the bike we are making they will want one.
