Skillion X – friends only
SUCCESSFULLY FUNDED
Skillion X friends only project has had hit a home run with all deposits pledged and the bike built and ridden by all - who are in the country 🙂
Nathan having a test ride...
The first prototype has been built and we have to collect those orders for the bikes..
We've added powerful upgraded disk brakes, this overcome the extra rolling momentum the fat-tires produce and you can stop these bikes on a dime with just one brake (ok maybe not a dime) maybe a 50 cent coin. We've kept the light alloy frame but added front suspension, a head light, an extra 10% bigger battery and upped the max load to 120 kgs to make it that bit tougher. For Smarts the Skillion X comes with a Pedalic system, this automatically provides power when your pedalling in levels depending whether you want range or power by a flick of the switch.

But the really big deal is the motor. We've moved over to a Mid-drive, an 8Fun 250Watt motor. This is 25% more power than the original Skillion and being in front of the gears, means you get the increased torque to rip up the hills!
Mid-drive 250W motor

Hey,
Been a busy couple of weeks but I've made some important progress.
- Implemented the front light on the bike, I didn't have this on the prototype, but I did promise it, so here it is - see attached.
- Upgraded the mounting attachments for the motor
- Tested the bike now over 200klm and several battery charge cycles - I was up to 35klm on one charge but that was pretty high speed and lots of hills
- Had the battery capacity tested and it came in at exactly as specified at 10AH
- Adjusted the handlebar positions of the brakes, throttle and shifters to a more comfortable ride
- I'm testing a new shifter that seems to work better - will let you know how that works out
- I'm testing a frame with the kickstand at further back, out of the way of the pedals - will let you know how that goes
The rush to Xmas has made ordering very difficult but I think we are there now and all the parts will be here in the new year.
Thanks for all the support you guys (and Gals) have given me.
Will keep you posted.

Hey,
I've been working to refine the bike for us and did a major test on Saturday clocking up 75klms around the shoreline and suburbs of western Lake Macquarie.
I was totally stuffed after that epic and with only 1 very minor adjustment I was very pleased with the bike! The left pedal crank started to squeak a bit on the last few klms from home. These can wear in a bit when new loose and a simple fix with just an Allen key. I found this with the Skillion 1 bikes, they would come loose and need re-tightened then they stopped coming loose.
I've been testing a set of mechanical disk brakes, with a larger (180mm) front disk, the one I showed you was 160mm. What I like about these is that they come with brake interlocks. When you brake the motor drive is inhibited. Also the handles are much longer which means that come right out to the end of the handlebars and provide lots of torque - so far I think these are the way to go but will let you know how this pans out. The interlocks can be used as a manual clutch, by touching the brake when you change it inhibits the motor and makes a softer change.
Also, as per the last update I'm testing a lever type of shifter - it seems a lot easier to me. I've worked out a way to make the shifting very easy, smooth and fast. Simply back-pedal about a 1/8th of a turn, then shift as you pedal forward again - it makes it really smooth and looks after the gears. The back-pedaling seems to stop the motor drive quickly, but when you pedal forward there is about a 1/2 turn before the motor kicks in, giving you a chance to change the gears smoothly and quickly.
Also, I put together a "micro" Crowdfunding campaign for you all to check progress and updates here:
